Richie aka Eleanor's Stepdad
To Eleanor, Richie is a horrible, awful, evil person. She is the only kid in her family who doesn't call him "Dad". She refuses because of the terrible things he has not just done to her, but to her mom, the woman he is married to. He abuses Sabrina, Eleanor's mom everyday and all the kids can hear him yelling and their mom crying each night. Richie comes home drunk and violent everynight. He can barely afford the kids. When Eleanor ticked him off one last time, he kicked her out for a year. At first, all the kids were allied against him, but when Eleanor returned from her exile, they all were on his side and acted as if he had not done anything to them and that nothing had ever happened or changed between all of them.
Mindy Sheridan aka Park's Mom
Park's mom, Mindy—real name Min-Dae—is from Korea. She met her husband, Jamie when he was in the Army, and moved to Omaha to be with him. She's tiny and very lovely, so sweet and kind. Mindy runs a beauty salon in her garage. She doesn't accept Eleanor initially, but when she sees Eleanor at the market with her siblings, she suddenly understands Eleanor's hard life because she herself comes from a poor family with lots of kids. She spends the afternoon in her room, crying, because she understands so well what Eleanor goes through every day of her life.
